Workplace Learning & Development

With businesses struggling to stay afloat and employees losing their jobs, our normal seems to change every day. To adapt to this new normal, we must optimize ourselves to the best of our ability through reskilling, upskilling, and strategically planning our next move.

According to McKinsey & Co [1], “workers across industries must figure out how they can adapt to rapidly changing conditions, and companies must learn how to match those workers to new roles and activities”.

The question to be answered is: “who should be responsible for the upskilling and reskilling of employees – the employee or the employer?”

Jorge Paulo Lemann said: “The greatest asset of a company is its people.”

As an employer, upskilling and reskilling of your employees during a period like this is very important because they will help you scale up quickly when you are back in business and strengthen the company for future disruptions.

Employers should understand that employees with high productivity are hard to come by. Therefore, they need to invest in the development of their workforce until they become an adaptable force that can shift and bend with changes in the business environment.

As an employee, you should note that things are changing rapidly, and these changes require you to adapt quickly so that you can position yourself for better opportunities within and outside the workplace.

To achieve this, it is imperative that you take ownership of your own development and acquire valuable skills that will help you to have a competitive advantage over others.

While it is important for employers to offer career growth and development opportunities, it is an employee’s responsibility to implement them and personally develop other skills that will make them outstanding and indispensable.

Conclusively, while reskilling and upskilling of employees is the responsibility of both the employer and the employees, knowing the right skills that are critical to the success of the business is more imperative.
